Bernard and Marguerite Thornton were married at the First Christian Church, Binghamton. At the time the Thorntons were living very close to railroad tracks and Bernard had to wait for a long train before making it to the wedding on time. Their first home was an apartment on Beethoven Street. | Family F11

Bernard was born on Alfred Street, Binghamton. then the family moved to Seminary Ave.
Ada was born on Charlotte St. in Binghamton although the Fishs were from Standfordville, PA according to Jane.
The Thorntons moved to Nimonsburg. Bernard moved there first and lived in a tent while Ray built the house in the evenings and on weekends. All but Bernard were born at Nimonsburg.
Then they moved to Conklin to a farm just east of the Lawrence farm. Ray built a house there. The house later burned down (around 1953) while Jane was away at college. When that happened, the family moved into a trailer home on the same property and lived there for 4 years. Ray and Ada moved to Florida for 4 years then back to Binghamton for 5 years when they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Source: (Interview with daughter Jane in Feb 2014).

Cornwall or Cornwell? - Explanation of Name Change from Harriett Cornwall in letter dated January 22, 1970 to her grand daughter Priscilla:
"Hiram Cornwell and his three sons Charles, William and Ernest used the "well" and the three girls Lois, Alida and Helen Martha (Nellie Butler) used "wall". Your grandfather Roy M and I were married "well" but I had trouble getting packages and letters (perhaps because of my Ohio accent.) One day I asked since half of the family uses "wall", why don't we? and he said "I don't care, if you think it is prettier". So it was "wall" from there on."

From "New England Families Genealogical and Memorial, Volume II" Edited by William Richard Cutter: "Charles Solon, son of Solon and Cordelia Agneline (Tilden) Thornton, was born April 12, 1831 in boston. He attended the public schools, then prepared for college in the Boston Latin School. He entered Harvard College in 1868 and graduated with the class of 1872, with a degree of A. B. He began to study las in the Boston University Law School and continued as a student in the offices of Lyman, Jackson, Isham & Lincoln, the junior partner of this firm being Hon. Robert T. Lincoln, son of Abraham Lincoln. Mr. Thornton was admitted to the bar, upon examination, at Ottawa in the supreme court of Illinois in September, 1873. He immediately began to practice in Chicago, where he opened an office. At a later date he entered into partnership with Justus Chancellor. Other partners were admitted later. The firm became one of the most prominent and successful in the city. Mr. Thornton made a specialty of corporation and real estate litigation. He has not avoided the other branches of his profession, however, and his success in criminal cases has been repeatedly demonstrated.
In recent years, Mr. Thornton's time has been largely engaged in cases brought against various corporations under the Sherman Anti-Trust Law, the Valentine Law of Ohio and the ant-trust laws of New York and Michigan.
In 1895 he was appointed by the governor of Illinois a member of the state board of education. He has always taken a keen interest in educational matters and originated a number of reforms in the public school system. He made a careful investigation of the Cook County Normal School and his report aroused much attention and discussion. He was a prime mover in establishing the college preparatory school of Chicago and the truant schools of that city. In 1895 he framed a teachers' pension bill, and through he effort and influence the bill was enacted in the legislature. His work in the board of education has been of the greatest benefit both to pupils and teachers in the public schools. In 1879 he was appointed by Mayor Carter Harrison, the corporation counsel of the city of Chicago. He was for a time corporation counsel of Lake, Illinois, now part of the city of Chicago.
Mr. Thornton is a member of the Masonic Fraternity. He is a member of Auburn Park Lodge; Auburn Park chapter, Royal Arch Masons; Montjoie Commandery, Knights Templar, Mystic Shrine, Oriental Consistory in Chicago. He is a member of the International Bar Association, the American Bar Association, the Chicago Bar Association, the Harvard Club of Chicago, the New England Society of Chicago, Engelwood Lodge of Odd Fellows, and in 1896 compiled a code for the use of that order in Illinois. In politics he was a Democrat.
Mr. Thornton married September 10, 1883, Jesse Fremont, born August 11, 1864, daughter of Francis Benton, a native of Vermont, and still living [in 1912]; one of the few surviving members of the Mexican war. Children born in Chicago: Mabel Jessie, born January 19, 1885; educated in the public schools and at the University of Chicago; married John Tutfhill Walbridge, of Chicago, and has two children: Charles Thornton Walbridge and Ruth Walbridge. 2. Pearl Esther, born February 24, 1887; educated in the Chicago public schools and graduated from the University of Colorado. 3. Hattie May, born May 3, 1889, educated in the chicago public schools and the University of Colorado; married Dr. Frank G. Douglass. 4. Chancellor Benton, born June 12, 1896; educated in public and private schools and by private tutors." | Thornton, Charles Solon (I193)

From Marcine Lohman in Ancestry Message Boards:
John Thornton immigrated to Newport in 1648 at age 14 (not confirmed). Although this would seem to indicate that he was not born in Rhode Island but most likely England. I have later found a record of immigration stating that John Thornton immigrated in 1639 at the age of 5 with the primary immigrant also being named John Thornton (his father perhaps?) [Filby, P. "Ezra, son of Ezra Dean was born in Taunton, Massachusetts, October 14, 1680. He married (first) Abigail, daughter of Captain James Leonard. He married (second) Abigail Bretnall, who survived him. He died July 1, 1737 at Taunton. Ezra Dean was a physician of note in his day. A writer in the "Columbian. of Taunton", in 1825, stated some interesting facts about Dr. Dean's children. He had 16 and their united ages, dead and alive, amounted to 1307 years. The ages of 11 amounted to over a thousand years. His daughter, Thoedora, lived to see descendants in the fifth generation and was the mother of Dr. Job Godfrey of Taunton, imminent for half a century. How Roy and Harriett met and wed. From a letter from Harriett Cornwall to her grand daughter Priscilla in 1970:
"Your grandfather Roy M went to Binghamton to work in 1910 for Vail Ballue Company then located on Henry Street between Washington and State Streets where the post office has stood since about 1920. One night a fire broke out so Vail-Ballue sent seven men including your grandfather to Coshocton, Ohio where they had another book publishing company for several years. My parents owned and operated a hotel with 55 bed rooms, some double and some single. It was supported by thirty glass blowers from September 1st to July 1st and also several "traveling men" regularly two nights per week. The seven printers stayed with us. They were mad because they were sent to a little town (15 thousand) so they were silly and rather fresh. I had charge of the dining room with six waitresses under me. The printers were there three weeks before I would visit with them. Then Sunday evening the fire truck went down the street and most people in town followed. I and your grandfather followed. The following week I had a date every evening then the bunch was called back to Binghamton. Then it was letters until July 20, 1911. I went on an excursion trip to Niagra Falls and Roy M's aunts invited me to visit in their home with him for a week. We were married October 18, 1911 in Coshocton's "Standen Hotel" and went to Binghamton to live, 1st four months at 80 Leroy Street, then bought furniture and moved on N. Front Street march 1912. Then 1916 with Edward and Jimmy we moved to Matthews Street hill #140. July 1924 to 2 Schiller Street with 2 boys and 2 girls and 2 old aunts. Roy died August 17, 1932. Then I opened the grocery store at that address." | Family F49
