  • Notes
    • From Marcine Lohman in Ancestry Message Boards:

John Thornton immigrated to Newport in 1648 at age 14 (not confirmed). Although this would seem to indicate that he was not born in Rhode Island but most likely England. I have later found a record of immigration stating that John Thornton immigrated in 1639 at the age of 5 with the primary immigrant also being named John Thornton (his father perhaps?) [Filby, P. William, ed. Passenger and Immigration Lists Index, 1500s - 1900s, Farmington Hills, MI, USA: Gale Research, 2006,Place: Newport, Rhode Island, Year: 1639; page number: 288, Immigrated in 1639.
    • The LDS Family Search site lists a John Thonreton christened 3 Aug 1634 in Cockerham, Lancashire, England with his father being John Thorneton.

      Pages 2104-2105
THORNTON John Thornton, the immigrant ancestor, was an early settler in Newport, Rhode Island, and in 1639 was in the employ of John Coggeshall, of that town. He was one of the twelve members of the First Baptist Church who founded the organization, October 12, 1648, but removed to Providence where he was living in 1679, and died 1695. In 1680 he served as deputy to the general assembly, and between 1683 and 1692 deeded his lands to his sons. Children: John, mentioned below, Thomas, Solomon, Elizabeth, Sarah, James, Benjamin, and William.
